SHELTER ISLAND, NY AUGUST 5, 2026 — A Celebration of Women Artists on Shelter Island 

Women of Depth brings together a group of women artists whose work explores depth, dimension, and the expressive intelligence of material.

Working across a wide variety of materials, each artist approaches material not simply as a medium, but as an active collaborator in the creation of form.

Through abstraction, these artists communicate not through narrative or representation, but through rhythm, texture, accumulation, and spatial presence. Meaning emerges in the tension between concealment and revelation, permanence and change.

Layering becomes more than a formal strategy; it is an emotional architecture. Through repetition, excavation, construction, and gesture, each work accumulates a visible history, evoking memory, resilience, vulnerability, and the passage of time.

Together, the remarkable diversity of materials becomes a compelling metaphor for the layered complexity of women’s lived experience.

Without prescribing a singular narrative, the exhibition acknowledges the many roles women inhabit and the ways experience accumulates, overlaps, transforms, and continually reshapes identity. Rather than illustrating these realities, the artists embody them through process.

Material becomes a repository of lived experience, carrying traces of intuition, persistence, and presence. The physical depth of each work reflects an interior landscape where complexity is embraced rather than resolved.

Ultimately, Women of Depth proposes that dimension extends beyond physical space. It is an emotional, psychological, and philosophical condition that emerges through the intimate dialogue between artist and material.

Together, these works demonstrate that abstraction is a language capable of holding contradiction, honoring multiplicity, and revealing the quiet strength found within layers accumulated over a lifetime.

Participating artists include Caroline Ramersdorfer, Joan Hall, Jane Manus, Rebecca Hutchinson, Isobel Folb Sokolow, Mercedes Vicente, Libby Raab, Darlene Charneco, and Elizabeth Gregory-Gruen.
