UNCOMMON GROUND II

A season-long, outdoor sculpture exhibition presented by C Fine Art & The Peconic Land Trust, hosted by Bridge Gardens

BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY  MAY 24th -- Curator Cheryl Sokolow of C Fine Art and the Peconic Land Trust will partner once again to bring contemporary sculpture to Bridgehampton this summer.

The exhibition will feature 18 outdoor sculptures by 11 contemporary artists for the summer season. Returning artists include Kevin Barrett, John Van Alstine and Isobel Folb Sokolow. New to this year's roster are Alexander Krivosheiw, Caroline Ramersdorfer, Norman Mooney, Herbert Mehler, Zoetrope, Michael Enn Sirvet, Peter Rosenthal and Lila Katzen.

The exhibition, entitled Uncommon Ground II, is a sequel to last year's exhibition, Uncommon Ground. Now in its second year at Bridge Gardens, the exhibition further explores our relationship with the natural world and the one which we create. The dynamic of the garden itself, with its undulating play between the purely natural and "cultivated", provides the substrate or "ground" from which the sculptures are seemingly born.

Many of the pieces in this year's show were conceived expressly for the Bridge Garden landscape or were created on site; forms spring forth from the rich garden soil where they were seeded and nourished, and swing from trees echoing limbs and branches, or flower from nearby hedges in boldly colored shapes and textures. Structures beget paths and vestibules, walkways or caverns and direct us through or around themselves, each creating a unique spatial reality, one which confronts and interacts with the viewer on a variety of levels.

The exhibition explores these ideas through the hands of 11 contemporary artists working in a variety of materials and techniques. All of the artists represented have an accomplished record of awards, grants and fellowships and have extensive exhibition histories with galleries, museums and public works venues throughout the United States and Europe.

ABOUT BRIDGE GARDENS
Bridge Gardens was founded in 1988 by Harry Neyens and Jim Kilpatric who designed and installed the gardens over the ensuing 20 years. In 2008 Bridge Gardens was donated to the Peconic Land Trust, a not-for-profit organization that conserves the working farms, natural lands and heritage of Long Island. With the help of many, the Trust has worked in partnership with landowners, local government, organizations, and communities to conserve over 10,000 acres of land on Long Island. The gardens are located on Mitchell Lane near the center of Bridgehampton and close to the site of other art events that will occur simultaneously throughout the season.
